Educational Philosophy
At Gateway Lower Academy, we believe that children are individuals with God-given talents, abilities and personalities which a teacher can nurture by teaching in a way which honours the child’s uniqueness. For that reason, Gateway emphasizes individualized progress and academic performance rather than group competition. We also believe that a wise teacher will ask students to work hard and reach his or her full potential, which requires diligence and persistence. To that end, we challenge our students to cultivate self-discipline and a strong work ethic while also finding joy in the learning process.
We have an emphasis on quality children’s literature, poetry and Scripture memorisation, conceptual maths instruction, an appreciation for great works of art, discussion-based history and literature classes when age appropriate, and a desire for students to seek truth and beauty in all subject areas. Our classroom is intentionally low-tech with a desire for students to read hard copies of books and write with pencil and paper in the younger years.
At Gateway Academy, we recognize each student as a unique person. As such, we seek to cater instruction to meet individuals’ specific needs and learning styles. Moreover, we aim to establish a loving and nurturing community where kids can be themselves, unafraid to make mistakes, and willing to grow.
Desired Student Outcome
